3 sustainable ways to design a building efficiently

With ‘innovation’ as its watch-word for over 70 years, CS’s design offices are developing solutions to meet today’s architectural challenges. Whether it’s a joint cover built to project specification or a reusable explosion vent or environmentally friendly wall protection, the CS team’s priority is above all to be sensitive to a project’s needs and to create solutions by cooperating with project management teams. All our solutions are designed to offer a more pleasant and efficient layout to improve a building’s level of comfort and make it easy to maintain.

Improving the life cycle of wall finishes with Acrovyn®

In a building where traffic passes through constantly, like an airport, shared or congregate housing or even a  school, walls and their corners are put under a lot of pressure.. Porous coatings (paint, non-woven or fibreglass) quickly pick up fingerprints and bags or suitcases tend to graze wall corners until the plaster starts to crumble away. To counter this process, turnkey solutions like corner protectors or protective plates made with Acrovyn, placed halfway up the wall, make it possible to keep finishes looking good as new.

Acrovyn, the material used to make these plates as well as the rest of the products in the range, is the ideal shield to preserve your walls. It protects against scratches and knocks by stopping nicks and cracks from developing on the surface. Acrovyn® is coloured all the way through so there is no risk of white marks accumulating when it gets hit by a heavy object. Walls are, therefore, protected and retain their decorative qualities for years.

Other types of traffic also have an impact on how public buildings are used. When people traffic shares space with heavy moving objects like shopping trolleys in a supermarket or handling trolleys such as loaded tray holders in a school cafeteria, it is best to use  heavy-duty protective materials. Unlike common models that protect a wall only against knocks, Acrovyn® SCR 50 and SCR 80 or even Aronde 170 crashrails benefit from full-length cushioning. This technology absorbs the shock wave created when it receives a blow, making it less likely that the wall fixings will come loose.

And here's the icing on the cake! Acrovyn® is also a synonym for first-rate hygiene

Acrovyn isn’t just a material that protects walls. It also boasts bacteriostatic properties that are particularly suited for buildings with constant traffic. Products made from Acrovyn are easy to clean and to disinfect. They can withstand highly acidic detergents and high-pressure steam cleaning. Regular cleaning processes are made more efficient and save time and energy, making the working environment more hygienic.

To improve hygiene in an area where walls are likely to get splattered or splashed, Acrovyn® wall plates can be welded edge to edge using weld seams. This specific installation achieves a smooth, hygienic and above all waterproof finish. This means you can use plenty of water in your cleaning processes without the risk of mould or fungus growth, which is unhygienic and lowers the indoor air quality.

What’s the most suitable kind of protection for your project?

Limit the need for air conditioning in a building by regulating heat with Airfoil®

It is increasingly common to see modern buildings using glass as a core material. Glazing is elegant and brings in natural light, which is good for the well being of people inside the building. These elements of comfort and aesthetics are both sought after by many project management teams and project owners.

Direct sunlight, however, can be an issue because, in summer, glazing can generate two-thirds of excessive heat input.. Design-phase studies offer ways to limit heat input by, for example, changing the exposure of the building, its windows, or even the solar gain from the woodwork  (the shading coefficient). Architectural solutions to provide external shading devices (awnings, roof overhangs, blinds or even sun-shades) also limit the glazing’s exposure to sun rays. Installing a sun-shade on the face of the building allows both construction and renovation projects to lower the temperature of spaces that are exposed to direct sunlight. Heat is reduced inside the building and there is simply less need for air conditioning.

The Airfoil® range’s further advantage that it is modular and fully customisable. Fixed sun protection can be assembled on a  projection awning, installed on the building’s façade (horizontal or vertical sun-shades, lying or standing blades) or even corner-mounted on a projection awning. RAL powder coatings are QUALICOAT and QUALIMARINE certified.

Aluminium blades can be ovoid, more commonly known as aircraft wing blades, or rectangular. To give the project better performance, they can incorporate soundproofing solutions or LEDs.

The final word on Airfoil® blades:  the shape of our blades have been specially calculated and tested in a wind tunnel to limit the resonance and noise of even strong winds.

Welcome people into a clean environment and limit floor erosion with Pedisystems® welcome mats

The welcome mat is an aesthetic, comfortable and practical staple found at a building’s entrance. Embedded in a recess, it is secure and fits with the accessibility requirements of public buildings. It also saves all its users from the classic slapstick scene: tripping up by getting your feet caught on the mat.

It also acts as a guardian protecting the durability for the nearby floor. Thanks to its design, which combines scraping textile fibres with aluminium rails, it traps and blocks small particles of dirt like dust or dry soil as well as larger pieces that get stuck in the soles of shoes. By preventing hard and rough debris, like bits of gravel, from entering, the mat does its job and stops deep scratches from forming on fragile floors. It also protects floors from premature erosion by blocking tiny particles like sand and dust that create micro-scratches over time. They are imperceptible on their own, but once they build up they become very visible and show up as wear spots on the floor’s surface.

The mat can also absorb moisture which further protects floors from water stains. Water makes floors slippery and damages them too. Drips and drops can stain parquet flooring just in the same way that dirt or grease are the enemies of choice for porous stone floors or carpets.

Our mats are still made in France, by hand and to order. To make sure that the finished product meets client expectations, our experts will advise you and conduct an on-site laser survey.
